Together with Lambrecht NV and KU Leuven, Quicksand is developing a SMART SILO system, to guarantee a 100% secure bulk delivery, from feed manufacturer to farmer silo.
Each farmer’s silo is equipped with a low-cost, permanent RFID tag, holding a unique ID for the silo.
The handheld tag reader communicates with the bulk trailer PLC via LoRa LPWAN RF. To ensure bi-directional link quality, RF speed is traded off versus link budget by applying the longest spreading factors. Communication over +1km has been achieved; packet loss was negligible.
The silo industry is a harsh environment for micro-electronics. Therefore, all galvanic contact methods for communication and charging should be avoided. To recharge the Lithium battery, the Qi wireless standard was implemented.
In order to sense both airflow and bulk movement, the applied sensor must be rigid & flexible to withstand all possible wear. A flexible resistor sensor in a sandblast-resistant rubber provides a reliable solution with proper dynamic range and repeatability.
