Lab test equipment for electro-active gels

Our partner imec asked us to design a specific control and measurement device for electro-active gels they are developing in the lab. Electroactive (EA) gels are polymers that expand when a voltage is applied to them. One target application for these gels is to build heart valves than can easily be controlled electronically.

The requirements for this system are: build a custom embedded, portable system that features:

  • an impedance measurement circuit
  • a controllable voltage output
  • attractive and clear graphical user interface with color touchscreen
  • internal DSP (digital signal processing) unit
  • USB port for logging, charging and firmware updates
  • rechargeable lithium-polymer battery
  • custom housing
  • smal series production
